Fenneke Wekker, PhD. (1972) is political sociologist and writer. She received her Bachelor's degree in acting at the Amsterdam School of Arts, and a Research Master’s degree (cum laude) in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam. In October 2020, she obtained her PhD-degree in political sociology, on her ethnographic study Building Belonging; Affecting Feelings of Home through Community Building Interventions. Her main fields of research are state-supported social interventions, urban sociology, 'feelings of home and belonging', and institutional mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion.
Between 2001-2004, Wekker was affiliated to the Northern Dutch Theatre (NNT) as writer-in-residence. Between 1998 and 2018, more than twenty of her theatre plays were performed by theatre compagnies throughout the Netherlands. At the same time, from 2012-2018, Wekker taught courses in sociology and anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, and published various articles in peer-reviewed journals. In 2017 her book Top-down Community Building and the Politics of Inclusion was published by Palgrave-MacMillan, New York.
Since December 2018, Fenneke Wekker is Head of Academic Affairs of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences(NIAS-KNAW).
